It was very slow & sluggish surfing the web. The screen is tiny, but I have good vision and it is not an issue for me. I would recommend it, but there are some caveats. Don't get me wrong, its no speed demon, but with the tweaks it performs at an acceptable (non-frustrating) level.
I have free wifi at work, and wanted to access the internet without having to pay for a cell-phone data plan. I have owned this device for about a month. I found a user forum [.].that provided some instructions on operating system & browser tweaks, which I implemented. For all intents and purposes, it is no more obtrusive than the typical iPhone, Palm, or Blackberry (which everybody has nowadays). I predominantly use the N810 to watch streaming stock market quotes during the day, and check on business news.
It is like night and day, now the device is usable. So it is not an issue for me to pull this out when I have a few minutes, and get on the net. As an internet surfer, it works great for me. I do not use this for texting, or for Skype, or GPS, just for browsing the web as mentioned, so I cannot comment on those other features. I did not want a phone, or have to sign up for any service plans, so the N810 fit the bill perfectly for me.
Out of the box, the device was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. In my line of work, it would have been very unprofessional for me to be seen carrying around and setting up a netbook at frequent intervals to check the internet, so this device works well for me. Overall I am very pleased with the N810.
I use this for light surfing and for listening to podcasts, and it's great for those purposes. I also like the ease with which apps are available from[.].My only complaint is that the screen is too close to the top row of keys, so it's hard to press those keys with your thumbs held sideways.
this thing devoured my soul, opened it's source to me, and is forcing me to squander time by being obsessed with it. Don't get it if you have a significant other.
Some complain that it has no cell phone built in but that is a desirable thing for me. Works as advertised. May not be a full blown PC but has enough power to do routine things but fits in my pocket. I just want to use WiFi connections to check e-mail, review some sites on the internet and things like that, no use as a cell phone.Skype works better than I expected. For the size and price, you cannot beat it. Only worry is that Nokia seems to be phasing it out and what will support be in the future.
I am so glad I held off buying ipod touch and bought this charm. The weight is the first thing you feel when you open the box. 256 MB is enough for most people. I bought it for $179 from buy.com and played it for 2 weeks. There is article about dual-booting from internal 2GB card. A lot of people have covered the pros and cons. It beats ipod touch in almost every front. That's why it has a prop support. The RAM could be a little larger.
I don't want to repeat but i wanna tell my first-hand feeling. The reason i gave it 4-star instead of 5-star is because:It could be a little lighter. Holding it at hand is a chore after a while. but for hardcore linux users, who try to emulate Palm OS, Android, even Windows 3.1, it is not enough. But the performance is definitely gonna be compromised.D-pad could be more useful if google G1 or blackberry like navigation ball is implemented.Function key should be on both side of keyboard. Some third party software is a must if you want to maximize the usefulness:Almost TI Graphing Calc emulator, camera, canola 2 & youtube plugin, load-applet,maemo-control-usb, maemo-recorder,maemopadplus,mediabox,mplayer,Personal menu, quiver, rhapsody, skype, unzip, zip.
